Side by Side Migration from Windows XP to Windows 7 using SCCM 2007/2012

Side by Side Migration from Windows XP to Windows 7 using SCCM 2007
·         Side by Side migration from Windows XP to Windows 7 uses USMT 4.0 to capture and restore user setting and application setting.
·         This solution can be used when we are going to upgrade hardware or want to change entire machine or hardware. Where In-place migration with hardlink doesn’t require changing the complete hardware (part of hardware can be change eg. HDD).
·         We can do following steps for Side by Side migration to capture user setting:-
1. Create "Win XP to Win 7 migration" to SMP Task Sequence using USMT 4.0 in SCCM
2. Create a computer association between Win XP machine A and Win 7 machine B (Both belong to the same Site).
3. Add the source computer to a new collection folder called "Win XP to Win 7 SMP Capture” and add destination computer to a new collection folder called “Win XP to Win 7 SMP Restore”
4. Advertise the "Win XP to Win 7 Capture" TS to the "Win XP to Win 7 SMP Capture” Collection
5. While running Windows 7, we can ask Config Manager to check for new programs and about 2 seconds later it popped up with the "Win XP to Win 7 Capture" TS.
6. We can run the TS and it created a folder on the SMP (This runs solely in Win 7. It never boots into PE or anything like that)
7. Job finished and released the store successfully.

·         First you have to create an association between the old computer and new computer. These associations provide source computer and destination computer.

·         To perform side by side migration, we will require two task sequences first is to capture user state and another is to deploy Windows 7 and restore user state from SMP.
·          We need to first perform backup operation on source computer (Windows XP) using capture User setting task sequence. It capture user setting on State Migration Point using USMT. It creates GUID for user state backup and keeps it inside the SMP folder.

·         Checked the scanstate logs which completed successfully and all user data capture under SMP folder. It created GUIDs for each backup of computer and while restoring user setting on another computer it will check the computer association which we have created before.
Fig.1.3 GUIDs created after USMT backup

·         We can boot new system in PXE and advertise bare metal task sequence on it.
·         Then we could do the bare metal deployment on new system which is destination in the computer association. This task sequence format and partition new system and prompt for new computer name.

·         After Windows 7 deployment it should automatically pickup the data during restore phase in Task Sequence. We can check loadstate logs to verify restoration completed successfully. We will get new computer with windows 7 and previous user setting without affecting user’s work.
·         This way we can perform Side by Side migration from Windows XP to Windows 7 using SMP and USMT 4.0.
